Media Revolution

I rather enjoyed the video clip this week. I agree with his thoughts on our society going through a revolution with our boom in technology and media. It's interesting how this clip and this blog assignment directly corresponds with my Media and Society class. I recently turned in an essay talking specifically about media revolutions and what it means for our society. I liked how he insisted we must all adapt and be creative. His bit on how children rely on their own perception was powerful, how many things do we just "go along with" because that's what is drilled into us. We no longer allow our own perspective to be our law. I am reminded of the term child like faith, it is similar to what he is saying here. Faith that we all have ability to survive this media revolution by being creative and jumping into it head first.

  1. I wonder how effective it is to "jump into it head first." Don't you think there would be a lot of panic and anxiety if someone was just thrown into a media rich environment? What would be the outcome? Would creativity be stifled? Consider how much time students (under 25) spend absorbing media. How much time do they spend creating media? I'd like to see some figures on that. I do agree with your observation that we must adapt. Without adaptation, folks are going to get left behind. In many ways, we are always behind.

  2. I agree with the call to creativity! For me the issue is how can technology/media be a tool for me in my life and not become a enslaved to it?
My daughter fights technology except when it enhances her life. She has no desire to be part of social networking or even to have an ipod. I would say she has an "old soul". she did however give the latest ipod to her boyfriend for Christmas, and now she is lamenting that all he wants to do is play with the ipod!!! Creatively use it for entertainment, information, support, but do not let it replace relationships with real people!!

  3. I enjoyed reading your comments and enjoyed a lot of the perspectives that you drew out of the video especially the observation about a child like faith in the technological and media driven revolution. It reminds me of a theory that I briefly studied called "cultural lag theory". Culture lags behind technology, technology is developed and then culture forms rules and values, behaviors and moods about it. Technology is always running ahead of us, where we see potential for culture and society to be in the future. However, culture will always lag to some extent, and if we do not learn to integrate a new way of addressing our media and technological revolutions, then we will surely suffer the ramifications.

  4. Yes, I think that to be adaptable and creative is a good thing. My suspicion about the video started when I saw that it was associated with the Shell Company, which would ordinarily make me not give it much thought except a curiosity perhaps. I wondered about his perception of creativity and is it just a creativity that fits in with the media revolution. That type of creativity is definitely a good thing, but as with any revolution, we need to question the underlying motives and assumptions before we blindly follow the trend. Child-like faith is wonderful, and I feel we need much more of that in the world, while at the same time look at the larger picture - say 50 years ago where were we and 50 years from now what do we envision?
